The Best Oral Hygiene Tips to Stave Off Oral Health Issues

Posted .

We all know brushing twice a day and flossing at least once, is a great way to prevent many dental conditions, including cavities, infections, and gum disease. At the office of Bradley L. Dyer DDS PC, we also know there is much more that can be done to ensure a healthy and beautiful smile – for possibly a lifetime. Here are the best oral hygiene tips in Sevierville, Tennessee, to consider:

  • Just as important as the habit of brushing is for healthy teeth and gums, the duration is very important, as well. It’s simply not enough to just brush for 30 seconds and you’re done. The recommendation from the ADA is at least two minutes, twice daily. Try humming the alphabet song twice or listen to a short song you enjoy.
  • Use the correct technique. Begin at a 45-degree angle to your gums, with short back and forth strokes across the tops of your teeth and the sides. Next, position the brush vertically, and with shorter strokes, focus on the backs of your teeth; this is where plaque tends to build up more often.
  • Choose the right toothbrush. Ensure the brush has small enough bristles that reach into the crevices of the molars, where food debris can be hidden. Typically, most adults require a small or medium-sized brush.
  • Floss correctly. To allow the thread to get in-between teeth, we recommend using a piece of floss that is about 18-inches, so that every few teeth, you can have a fresh thread to work with and get the best clean and not be reintroducing bacteria. The floss should wrap around each tooth, creating a motion of a forward or backward ‘C’ shape.
