With everything to do during the holiday season, it’s easy to forget a little thing like flossing. Let’s review some flossing techniques to make sure your teeth stay healthy and clean for this holiday season!
Start with an 18” piece of single-filament floss. Wind it around your index fingers until you have a manageable section. Use a gentle rocking motion to slip the floss between your two front teeth,.continuing the gentle sawing motion as you carefully remove plaque and debris from between your teeth. Repeat around every tooth–including behind the back molars! Use a new section of floss for every tooth.
Flossing is very simple. Unfortunately, many people have a hard time getting into the habit. Sometimes it is uncomfortable for your gums, or you have a hard time physically maneuvering the floss around every tooth. If you have problems flossing your teeth, it’s alright. There are other interdental cleaning options, such as water flossers, pre-strung flossers, and floss for sensitive teeth. Talk with Dr. Bradley Dyer and our team about alternate options.
If you are an infrequent flosser trying to mend your ways, be aware that it is normal to feel slight discomfort at first. If you feel sharp pain, or the discomfort does not go away after 2 weeks, call and set an appointment for our team to look at it.
