If you are anticipating new dentures, it’s very common to have questions and concerns about how dentures will impact your life. Our dentist and team are happy to address any questions prior to the placement of your dentures. We invite you to read below to receive further information about how to adjust to your dentures.
At first, you may experience some discomfort, as dentures can feel strange for a while, such as bulky and unstable while your mouth adjusts. Over time, the muscles in your cheek and tongue becomes familiar with the dentures and helps you to overcome these issues. If you find that after a few weeks or months you are not adjusting to your dentures, please feel free to contact our office to determine if any adjustments are needed. Oftentimes, patients require at least one follow-up appointment or more in order to ensure the dentures provide the right fit. We encourage you to not hesitate to make an appointment if needed.
Many patients are hesitant about eating with dentures because they worry it will be difficult or feel uncomfortable. While it’s true that you will need to adjust to eating with dentures, the effort will become easier as you grow used to them, and you can begin eating nearly all foods as you used to. In the beginning, you should stick to soft foods that are easy to chew and eat, but as you become more comfortable, you can begin eating firmer types of foods. To avoid dislodging your dentures when you eat, chew on both sides of your mouth.
